Richard Gray’s illustrations were spotted by Italian Vogue’s Anna Piaggi, when his work was entered for a memorial competition for Antonio Lopez, while Gray was in his first year at Middlesex University studying fashion. His first commissions quickly followed for Vogue Italia, Anna Piaggi’s D.P. pages and for Vanity.

Clients he has collaborated with include Agent Provocateur, Alexander Mcqueen, Givenchy, Vivienne Westwood, Dunhill, Printemps, Miguel Adrover, Tumi, Immodesty Blaize, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue And William Baker.

Editorially his work has appeared in Vogue Italia, Vogue Gioiello, Vogue Pelle, Stella Magazine, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, Decoy Magazine, Io Donna, Madame Figaro, Flaunt Magazine amongst many others. He has illustrated the couture shows for the Observer Magazine and the Independent on Saturday Magazine.

In 2004 he illustrated for Alexander McQueen for the ‘Fashion at Belsay’ exhibition at Belsay Hall. He also illustrated for Alexander McQueen’s Black exhibition in the same year.

For Alexander McQueen’s s/s 2008 show ‘La Dame Bleue’, dedicated to Isabella Blow, Gray was honoured to be asked to create a poster sized portrait of Isabella which was used as the show’s invitation. Richard created an installation called ‘Morpho-illogical’ at the V&A for Anna Piaggi’s Fashionology exhibition. He was also asked by the V&A to contribute an illustration to be included as part of the commemorative album of 150 British artists celebrating 150 years of the V&A. Gray was asked to contribute an illustration to a Showstudio exhibition of Martin Margiela. Two Bodymap illustrations exhibited at the Fashion Illustration Gallery have become part of the V&A’s permanent collection.
